Isobel Perl has always been makeup and skincare obsessed. When the world was on pause due to COVID, she took the opportunity to launch her own beauty brand using British kaolin clay: PERLcosmetics. Read on to find out more about her story:
Can you tell us about yourself and why you started Perl Cosmetics?
I’m Isobel and I founded PERLcosmetics in November 2019 after I went through a difficult period in my life. I felt as though I lacked any passion in both my life and career and decided to take action. Skincare and makeup have always been a huge love of mine, and I knew I wanted to steer my career down this path. It’s at the same time I remember reading an article about how popular pink clay masks were over in Australia and this sparked my interest. Although PERLcosmetics was incepted in 2019, it wasn’t bought to life until May 2020 after I lost my job during the pandemic. I saw this time as an opportunity to follow a dream of mine and get the business started!
What is some advice you have for people who have recently lost their job and want to start their own ventures?
Don’t be afraid to take the leap of faith. It will never feel like the right time to do it and you’ll always have a handful of reasons as to why now isn’t the right time. If you’ve put a lot of thought and planning into bringing your idea to life, then go for it! There is no time like the present.
Can you tell us a bit more about Perl Cosmetics and your hero product?
My one hero product is our pearl powder clay mask with illuminating oil. When speaking to my customers, they told me they found clay masks either too oily, drying or the wrong texture. Having a product that allows the customer to combine the powder clay along with the water and oil means they can create a truly customizable mask. If your skin is oily, use less oil, and if it’s dry/sensitive then use more! Not only that but because you mix it up yourself it really brings the fun and enjoyment back into your skincare routine!
I use natural ingredients, with no parabens, preservatives, palm oil, alcohol, or artificial fragrance. Not only do I like to keep things natural, but I also keep sustainability at the heart of what I do. I use glass containers, and recyclable packaging and the little spoon and silicone brush that is included can be used time and time again. I’ve also introduced recycling for rewards scheme, where customers can send back their old packaging for free and receive 15% off their next order!
What does it mean to be a #beautyboss?
To be a Beauty Boss means I can be doing my dream job and get paid to do it! I can manage my own time, have a varied day and finally, I’ve found my passion and purpose in life! I’m driven and really hope I can make the business a success.
