Aadya Kapoor: Makeup by Aadya

21-year-old Aadya Kapoor always knew she wanted to pursue makeup full-time. After training in a professional makeup school,  she received the opportunity to do makeup for various Ads and TV productions.  She currently works as a freelance makeup artists in Mumbai. Don’t forget to read her journey and her story:

Can you tell me a bit more about yourself and how you got into makeup?

As a young girl, I used to watch my mom and my grandma get ready, and I would get fascinated by all the makeup. I would always think about how much fun it was to buy blush and lipgloss. As I slowly grew up, I realized I did not like studying, and my passion for makeup grew further. When I went to my cousin sister’s wedding, she was telling me how much potential there was to be a makeup artist, and how much of an in-demand occupation it was. I decided to pursue my passion for makeup full-time.

How did your passion turn into a career?

I realized that in order to turn this into a full-time career, I would have to take some professional training. After completing my undergrad, I researched 2-3 makeup schools in Bombay and ended up doing my training at Fat Mu. Fat Mu was great as a makeup school as it really helped me professionalize my makeup skills, and also meet people who had similar passions.

You have also done makeup for a couple of Bollywood films. How did you get your foot in Bollywood?

I actually got this opportunity through my makeup school: Fat Mu. Whenever movies need extra makeup artists they tend to recruit students from professional makeup schools. Through Fat Mu, I got the opportunity to do makeup for the movie Gully Boy, the tv show Made in Heaven, and various ads as well. However, doing makeup for a Bollywood movie is not easy. I remember for Gully Boy, they called me in at 5am and I was working until 9pm. It was too many hours, too tiring, and not as glamorous as I thought it would be. I realized I much rather pursue bridal makeup and makeup for various shoots/campaigns

You are only 21! How has this been a challenge?

This is definitely tough as people think I am too young, despite having the experience. At the end of the day, I cannot force someone to hire me. I just have to prove it with skills. What really helps is my Instagram page and word of mouth.

What does your day look like?

As a freelancer, every day is different. You definitely have a lull period where there are days when you have nothing to do. And after a couple weeks of not having any projects, I get really excited about going back to work.  The busiest time for me is usually November to February, also known as Wedding Season in India.
