Rekha Kumar: Cut & Colorist

Rekha Kumar has always been passionate in hairdressing and worked hard to achieve her goals. She persevered through many challenges but stayed focused on her goals. Eventually, she moved back to Bangkok ad started her own company, and started freelance hairdressing. Read on more to find out about her story:

Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your business as a Cut & Colorist Entrepreneur?

I had always dreamed of being a hairdresser as a child and also thought it was impossible so as I grew older I chased more ‘realistic’ goals. I studied a Bachelor of Business in hospitality management in Melbourne, Australia and worked in events for a number of years until I decided it was time for a change. At 30 I finally took the plunge and undertook the course at renowned BIBA Academy and once I qualified, I secured a role with the BIBA Salons. I worked there for a few years, getting promoted to senior stylist/colorist. I suddenly had a wrist injury and was off work for some time so I decided to head home to Bangkok. My recovery took longer than anticipated and I stayed for 8 months, and began working on clients as I was close to fully healing. I went back to Australia and decided Bangkok was where I was meant to be and moved home to begin my own company and began freelance hairdressing!

Why do you enjoy being an entrepreneur?

I have the best of both worlds. I get to do what I love and on my own time! It’s constantly a learning curve for me and it makes me believe that I can grow personally and professionally, aligned.

What are some healthy hair care tips?

1. Always use good products on your hair. Your hair doesn’t generate new cells like your skin.
2. Use a heat protectant every time you wash as even though you don’t apply heat, we are in the sun even for a few minutes a day. Sunscreen on the hair!
3. Don’t fight your hair when brushing or combing, especially when wet! Love your hair, always and it will love you back.
4. Regular haircuts ARE a thing
5. Treatments also are; a thing.

How do you ensure maximum satisfaction for your clients?

The consultation is the most important part. I need to make sure I completely understand what you want and you completely understand what I can deliver!
At the end of each service, I go back to our initial consultation to ensure we have achieved what we said we would. I start a plan of the next steps to maintain what we have done and how to keep getting you to the end goal.

What does it mean to be a #beautyboss?

A #beautyboss is someone who thinks self-care is a priority and knows that self-care comes in many different forms. Beauty and confidence come together hand in hand. A #beautyboss should also translate to you being unapologetically you.
